About

Hello and welcome to beyond the blank canvas!

Beyond the blank canvas is an interior blog based on my home and my passion for all things interiors.

So, if I could introduce myself I’m Sal, a mother of 3 who works as a secondary school religion, ethics and philosophy teacher. I am incredibly passionate and obsessed with all things interiors which is why I decided to do this blog. This obsession first came about when my mother gave me free rein (obviously without the free use of her credit card- she’s a responsible parent) to do my bedroom up as a teenager.

The name beyond the blank canvas came from our home being exactly that, beyond the blank canvas!

MY HOME

Our journey began in early 2015 when we bought our first house. We practically scoured the planet for the perfect house but nothing ever gave us that feeling. My husband would like something I didn’t and I would like something my husband didn’t. Compromise wasn’t an option, it would have to be something we both loved (if you’re in the process of buying a house, you’ll know exactly what I mean)

I woke up one morning to a phone call from the estate agent, advising me that there was a house that had just come on the market. She forwarded me the details of the house with those all important photos and immediately I fell in love. I was at work so Mr R went down to see the house on his lunch break:

“Sal, I love it. Shall I put in an offer”

“Go for it”, I replied.

Yes, that’s right, we put in an offer before I had even seen it. Sometimes you’ve just got to go with your gut (at the time I was pregnant so it was a big gut).

Rushed back home from work excited to see the house and as I parked up in the drive, the feeling grew stronger. I saw past the ancient wallpaper, the half ripped out kitchen, mahogany woodwork and the bright red carpet! All I saw was potential! It wasn’t all plain sailing though. Unfortunately, we did get gazumped and had to go up an extra £10K, money we could have put into the renovation, which was rather annoying to say the least!

After a full gutting out from the kitchen to the bathroom, electrics and plumbing we finally moved in a year later and gave it our own stamp (by ‘we’ I mean ‘I’, Mr. R let me make a majority of the interior decisions. I obviously wasn’t complaining!)

Anyways, if interiors are your thing and you want some good ideas to recreate in your own home then you’re in the right place! Any questions about our renovation journey please feel free to ask.

If you want to stay in touch and want regular updates, add in your email address on the site. You can also stay in touch through my social media, Pinterest and Instagram.

I would love to hear your comments/suggestions, so please feel free to comment on my blog posts.

I look forward to sharing our mutual love for interiors.

Sal x
